Canoe Tripping and Oatmeal, Chocolate, Pretzel bites!


One of the best parts of summer for me is getting out on the water.

I've always been a water baby, I used to be the first one in the pool and the last one out when I was a kid. Every year my brother and I compete for "first jump in the lake" (earliest so far is mid May), and I love getting in my canoe or kayak for an adventure.

So when Kris suggested a canoe day trip for his 30th birthday, I was all in!

On a sunny Sunday we woke up early to put together our supplies before heading out on the lake. As the experienced tripper I planned out our lunches, water, sunblock, waterproof camera; Kris was in charge of beer and ice. Everything we would need to have a great day! 

When you get out in the canoe, it's important to have something easy to snack on. If you're going to be paddling for hours on end (like we were) don't be afraid to go carb and calorie heavy! 

Trust me, you're going to burn through that energy in no time.

Trail mix can be difficult to manage in a canoe, and Kris being allergic to nuts makes it a bit of a wash for us anyway. I decided to take a different route and whip up some No-Bake Oatmeal, Chocolate Pretzel bites for us to munch on while we paddled.

These bites are SO easy to throw together (10 minutes tops) and freeze up well for when you want a cookie-ish power boost before (or during) your workout.


No-Bake Oatmeal Chocolate Pretzel Bites!

Ingredients
  • 2 cups of your favourite oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup pretzel pieces (chopped or broken by hand)
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup all purpose flour

Directions

1) In a large bowl mix everything but the flour and stir until well combined

2) Add flour 1 tbsp at a time until you can form the mixture into round balls

3) Form mixture into round balls! Eat up or freeze for future use 

SO EASY!


With our snacks all made (and our beer nice and cold!) we packed up our canoe and headed out on the water.


We left the bay that my cottage is on and headed out onto the larger water near Parry Sound. Pointing our bow toward Killbear Provincial Park we paddled, chatted, snacked and drank for two happy hours.


Plus we had on some killer trucker hats! Courtesy of a bachelorette party I hosted a few years ago with a "Mad Hatter" theme.


Reaching our destination we tied the canoe to shore, unpacked our picnic supplies, fishing rods and towels and explored the shoreline.





Having the waterproof camera on this trip was very freeing. I wasn't as worried about us capsizing, and we were able to swim and fish and enjoy our day without worrying about my toy. 

Plus how else would I have been able to take these cheesy shots of me and the mister? 



And seriously: the hats!

Three hours of sunshine, sandwiches, oatmeal bites, beer, fishing and swimming later we were POOPED! It was another two hours back to the cottage and we were decidedly less chatty on the way back as we worked our arms to exhaustion.

Which was fine because there is no better place to relax than at the cottage, and no better place to relax at the cottage than floating by your dock.
