Fresh Shrimp Rolls

The other night, the idea of turning on my oven or stove to make dinner was unbearable. It's been far too hot to consider heating up my apartment further.

So when it came time for dinner, I decided the best thing to do was keep it cool, fresh and light.

Enter: Fresh Shrimp Rolls.

My Home Is Really Messy Today (and that's okay!)

I pride myself on being an organized person.

Overwhelming mess makes me cringe, I tend to have a plan for EVERYTHING, and I will admit to being a bit of a micro manager (I'm working on it!)

I'm good at throwing things out, I actually like to vacuum and I believe in making my bed every day.

But boy oh boy can our home get messy!

How To Toss Out Your Clothes!

A person's closet is a funny place.

It can be the source of great fun and filled with fond memories, it can be a source of frustration, or it can be an overwhelming mess with the door better kept CLOSED.

We live our lives in our clothes, and we house them in a place that is often cramped, poorly organized and filled with things we regret wearing.

I believe that a closet should make you feel good. It should be filled with things that bring you joy and make you feel beautiful, and you should be able to easily see everything inside it.

5 Quick Ways To Practice Self Care Daily

When was the last time you practiced some self care?

When was the last time you hit up a yoga class, got a manicure, drank a hot cup of tea or booked a massage?

Guys, life is just SO hustle and bustle. And if you're anything like me you just do NOT know how to take breaks. You have a job, side hustle, friends, fitness routine, love interest and general #adulting to take care of... I still wonder how the heck I'm going to throw kids into all that (eventually)

Change Your Perspective: Rearrange Your Furniture!

I don't know about you, but I find can get REALLY antsy in my space.

Sometimes it's due to a sudden change in my life, or upcoming change. Sometimes it's because nothing has changed in so long I'm starting to get stir-crazy, and sometimes it's because I have a lack of creativity in other areas of my life.

Whenever I start to feel like this, I throw on my comfiest clothes, switch on a movie, and move all the furniture around.

Life Hack A Day: My Favourite Hacks

I can hardly believe that I've reached the end of my Life Hack A Day Project!!!

It's been one hell of a month, with lots learned along the way, tons of laughs, and some great input from all of you on Instagram who were following along!

For my final week of life hacks, I decided to pick my FAVOURITE hacks. The ones that I most wanted to try, that seemed the most interesting, or that pop up on my Pinterest feed the most.

Friday Wine Down

Happy Friday!!!!

Guys, the Wine Down is taking a bit of a different turn this week. Normally I like to review three or four things I've been up to, and then talk about what I plan on drinking for the weekend.

BUT, since tomorrow is CANADA DAY, I thought I would talk about a few things I LOVE about my country (and then tell you what I'm drinking).

Canada turns 150 years old tomorrow, so the celebrations are going to be big, big, BIG! Get ready to see our pretty Prime Minister out in all his glory (and check his socks, which are always a tribute to whatever he's out doing), as well as 33 million Red and White clad Canadians, politely offering doughnuts and beer to anyone who looks like they might be running low.

As for me, I'll be up at my cottage ("Rock, Bought'em") celebrating with my family! Expect lots of instastories!

OK lets Wine Down and talk about why Canada is so freaking great!

Adelaide Eats

If you've never visited Toronto, I want to let you in on a little known fact...

Torontonians LOVE their food!

We are obsessed with niche foods, unique foods, and celebrating food. There is no shortage of incredible markets in the city, both year round and seasonal. We also host fabulous festivals celebrating everything from Greek cooking, to Mac and Cheese, to Rib Fests and Veggie meals.

Toronto is a foodie paradise, so when the newest open air market popped up just two minutes from my office, I was THRILLED!

Life Hack A Day: Too Good To Be True Hacks

I can hardly believe that I'm already wrapping up another week of life hacks! Next week is my last week and I've learned so much.

Mostly that about 80% of the life hacks are total nonsense, but the ones that work are AWESOME.

This week's life hack a day project theme was "too good to be true" hacks. Essentially just hacks that seemed a little weird and a little pointless, but that needed to be tried all the same.

There was fire, crafts, and some (mild?) crime...

All in all, not wildly successful, but a pretty fun week!

Friday Wine Down

HAPPY FIRST FRIDAY OF SUMMER!!!!!

I can't believe it is officially summer! While the weather has been getting warmer for the past few weeks, there's something so wonderful about making it official on June 21st!

The long hot days, the warm breezy nights, PATIO SEASON!!

So I'm a little excited. Plus next weekend is the Canada Day long weekend and our country is celebrating it's 150th birthday so it's gonna be a BLAST (just wait until you see our family Canada swag!).

With so much excitement coming up and planning to be done I only got one blog post out this week. But that's ok because there's so much on the horizon to be excited about that I can hardly stand it.

So enough prattling on, it's time to Wine Down this week! Grab your vino and let's go.

Life Hack A Day - Hacking The Internet

I don't know how anyone adulted before the internet.

Think about it: how many times a day do you google how to do something, or check something online?

You can get a degree online, learn new skills, consume media, or start a blog to share your thoughts with the world.

For my third week of the life hack a day project, I decided to try out some of the hacks that took full advantage of the internet. Hacking the internet as it were... but with considerably less skill than people who actually do that.

5 Tips To Improve Your Public Speaking Skills

Ahhh public speaking. Top phobia and bane-of-existence for people all over the world.

Public speaking is one of those things that can bring brave men to their knees, that successful women struggle with above all else, and that ruins grade school classes for children year-after-year.

Of course, it's also something that sooner or later we all must attend to. Whether professionally or socially, we've all had our 5 minutes of fame behind a podium or at the head of a boardroom table speaking to groups large and small.

Public speaking is something I used to be HORRIBLE at. I mean, it just terrified me. but through the years I've worked hard and overcome my anxiety and now I can speak quite comfortably in front of any group of people at length. In fact, I kind of love the rush!

Life Hack A Day - Hacking The Kitchen

I love food.

I love cooking, I love eating, I love trying new recipes, I love everything about being in the kitchen.

Ok well maybe not dishes, but I love the rest of it!

And so, for my second week of my Life Hack A Day Project I decided to get down to hacking the area of my life that brings me so much joy, in the hope that I could find a few things to make my time in the kitchen that much better.

I have to say: Not a supremely successful week, though definitely an interesting one!

Let's talk about Life Hacking The Kitchen.

Friday Wine Down

Happy Friday!!!

Guys I am REALLY happy it's the weekend!

My coworkers on my project have been on vacation for two weeks and I have been beyond swamped at the office and need a BREAK.

Plus this weekend should be a blasty blast! I have a Mani Pedi booked with my bestie on Saturday, and then on Sunday we're celebrating her baby shower because she's due in TEN WEEKS!

Crazy, I am so not mature enough to raise a little one right now, but I am so so beyond ready to be a cool auntie to her baby boy!

Anyway, with all that ahead of me, I think it's time we Wine Down this week! But let's kick off with the MOST important thing...

Little Pebbles - Kensington Market

One of the joys of working in downtown Toronto is getting to explore all the little pockets of the city.

I've always lived close to the city, but not right downtown. So while I had my favourite spots, I didn't know intimate nooks and crannies the way some of my friends did who have always lived in the city.

Life Hack a Day - Hacking Minor Annoyances

Do you ever come up with a task that you just find annoying or difficult?

I know I have some tasks that fall into these categories. Whether it's cleaning the inside of my kettle, putting on a tight fitting bracelet, or finding a way to organize my hair ties (there must be a better way!) I'm always looking for a way to improve on these activities.

So for my first week of the life hack a day project, I decided to take on some life hacks that should ease some of the finicky tasks in my life.

Because this was a short week, we only have 3 life hacks to cover, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were hacks worth hacking!

So let's start with one of the best days of the year...

The Life Hack A Day Project

Lately I've found myself itching for a personal project.

Maybe because we're reaching the midway point of the year, maybe because the weather is FINALLY nice, or maybe just to break up the monotony, but I've been trying to come up with a challenge that I can do for a month.

At first I thought I should do a self improvement project... but honestly the idea didn't thrill me. I wanted to do something a little hard, a little silly, something I could blog and think about that wouldn't get monotonous after 30 days. Something FUN.

Then one night I was scrolling through Pinterest when it hit me. I turned to Kris FULL of excitement because I had decided what my June Project was going to be: Life Hack a Day

A New York Minute

When you think of vacation, you often think of a whole week off. Lazy days on the beach, or sitting in a café, hours to shop and think of nothing but where you should stop and have your next drink.

But then there's the other kind of vacation. The kind where limited time leads to reckless enjoyment and forces you to make decisions about what you truly want to see and do!

It may shock you to find out that I actually prefer the second kind of vacation. While I appreciate that long lazy days are maybe more relaxing, I think there is something so fun about travelling in a hit-and-run fashion and foregoing maybe just a little too much sleep in the name of enjoying every single minute.

So when I had the opportunity to spend a whirlwind 42 hours in New York (including travel and airport time!) how could I possibly say no?

It's a good thing the city never sleeps!

5 Tips For Eating Mindfully

It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year, and now bikini season is just around the corner!

How is it possible it manages to sneak up on me every year?

If you're anything like me, you like to wring every last DROP out of hot summer weather.

Living somewhere where it's cold (or at least chilly) for most of the year has me embracing those 6 weeks of true bikini weather like a long lost friend.

So of course, I want to look my best while doing it!

Friday Wine Down

Happy Friday!!!!

It's been a long, chilly and rainy week in the Toronto area.

Throw in my post-travel cold and I have been laying kinda low on the blogosphere...

That said, it's been a fabulous two weeks, especially the Easter long weekend which involved great friends, great family and fabulous travel! So let's get started and Wine Down this week with....

A few months ago, my mom snagged this one out of the newspaper, and it's quickly become one of my favourites! Wok Fried Lamb with Cumin.

5 Tips For Bachelorette Party Planning

When it comes to wedding season, most women can expect to spend the occasional Sunday afternoon at some kind of luncheon watching the bride open gifts.

If you're in a bridal party, pre wedding events may also include an engagement party, rehearsal dinner, or any number of appointments.

So while the "Big Day" is proceeded by lots of "little days" to get everyone in the mood for canapés and champagne toasts, I will say that above all else the Bachelorette party is my favourite!

I love everything about bachelorette parties. I love planning them, I love the idea of a bunch of women celebrating a friend, I love the raunchy games, the occasional happy tears, and the seemingly endless potential for fun.

Above all though, I love the look on the bride's face mid-way through the night when all the wedding planning stress has melted away and she's just focused on enjoying HER night (without all the decorum of a shower).

having planned a few (ahem: five.. and climbing) bachelorette parties in my day, I want to give you the tools for success to make sure your friend has an INCREDIBLE time!

Here are my 5 tips for planning a great bachelorette party!

Always a Bridesmaid

When you hit your mid-20s, something funny happens, your friends suddenly fall into one of two groups:

1) Those who are getting married/in weddings constantly
2) Those who seem to avoid weddings with a 10 foot pole

Most of my friends seem to fall into one category or the other. They either spend all their time at weddings, or they haven't really started into that yet.

I fall into the first group.

Taking 15 Minutes To Improve Your Work Day!

When I got my first part time job my parents offered me this piece of advice:

Just because your shift starts at 9:00, doesn't mean you show up at 9:00. Arrive 15 minutes early to get ready so that you can hit the ground running the moment the workday starts.

This lesson is one I carry with me to this day. It energizes me to be one of the first people in the office, and to streamline the first part of my work day so that I am my most efficient self all day long!

Today I want to share with you my process of taking 15 minutes at the start of the work day to make your WHOLE day better!

The PERFECT Tomato Chicken Sandwich

There's nothing better than eating something with fresh ingredients.

The flavour, the texture, the colours; all of these things are amplified when your ingredients are fresh. It's the difference between a bland meal, and an exciting one.

Which is why, when I go to make a sandwich, I pick the freshest ingredients possible.

I look at sandwiches the same way that I look at salads, which is that they come in one of two ways: boring, or AH-MA-ZING! There is nothing worse than a boring sandwich, in the same way that when you eat an incredible sandwich you want to share it with the world.

So today, I'm going to share this amazing sandwich the world. Not just amazing, the PERFECT tomato chicken sandwich.

Cajun Fish Tacos

In our house, we take Tex-Mex VERY seriously!

Quesadillas, enchiladas, nachos with guacamole, fajitas.. all of these are regular fixtures in our diet. I buy cilantro on a weekly (sometimes bi-weekly) basis.

Of course, one of our absolutely favourite things to make is fish tacos!

We've tried different variations on the fish taco through the years with great success, but our recent favourite leaves them behind in the dust. Breaded, a tad spicy and all around delicious, Cajun Fish Tacos.

These pan fried beauties are SO quick to make, you can easily pull this meal together in 20 minutes including the prep time. This is good since you'll scarf them back faster than you can imagine and need to make more PRONTO (provided you aren't totally stuffed of course!)

So let's get started.

Friday Wine Down!

Happy Friday Everyone!

We're about to launch into the first weekend of Spring and I already have a wedding shower to attend.

Off. To. The. RACES!

This has been a week filled with ups and downs, excitement and stresses, warm weather and snow (sigh) and general spring fever mixed with vacation brain (I'm leaving for Key West on MONDAY!)

So with SO much going on, I think it's high time we Wine Down this week! Grab a Cocktail (like this one!) and join me.

Pretty in Pink Cocktail

Let's face it: Spring is the best season to feel fresh and pretty!

Something about the weather, the feeling of newness, the soft sunshine and the feel in the air always makes me feel my most feminine and pretty.

But there's more to Spring than meets the eye. It's a season of amazing change, strength, growth, rainstorms and cold snaps.

If the seasons had genders, Spring is as powerfully feminine as you get.

Maple Salmon Asparagus Pasta

Sometimes in cooking (as in life) collaboration is the key to success!

You take two good ideas and combine them to make something wonderful. A culinary team that is both surprising and delightful to the palette.

Today I want to talk about a culinary collaboration that came about when a friend of mine had taken leftovers I'd made from the night before and threw them all together in a pan to make the MOST delicious pasta!

I want to talk about Maple Salmon Asparagus Pasta.

It's time to peel off those socks, look down at your toes, and realize you need a pedicure. Desperately.

Friday Wine Down!

Happy Friday!!!!!

It has been a loooooooooooooong time since I last did a wine down; I think it's because the monotony of winter gives way to the same post every week...

"It was cold... we stayed in and ate curry... I am fighting off winter weight..."

But now that Spring is in the air (even though it's -10C/14F) I have been re energized! So let's Wine Down this week!

Lessons From My Literary Heroines

I've always been a big reader. As a child, teenager and now as an adult you can most often find me with my nose in a book, curled up in a big chair with a cup of tea.

My books are my friends. I have favourites that I read every year, specific books for certain seasons, and get more value from my Indigo points card than anyone I know.

My love of books stems from an early age. My parents always read to us from the time we were small. Some of my favourite memories are sitting up before bed with my Dad while he read to me from the Narnia series.

So it should come as no surprise that my books impact me in a way that some young women are often impacted by actresses or musicians. The girls and women who I modeled myself after were found more often between the pages of a book than on my TV screen.

Arranging Your Own Spring Bouquet

It's March! It's March! And I have to say, I'm pretty excited that it's nearly Spring!!!

Nothing makes me happier at this time of year than throwing open my windows, giving the apartment a good clean, and then decorating with some spring touches!

Five Ways To Save Money Daily

Tell me if this scenario sounds familiar

You woke up this morning late, so you jumped out of bed, got ready quickly and ran out of the house.

No time to walk to the train station, you hop in the car instead;  don't forget to stop for a coffee and a breakfast sandwich at Starbucks since you didn't have time to eat at home. Grab a bottle of water too, since you're really thirsty.

Of course that's not going to keep you full ALL day, when your tummy grumbles at noon you run out and grab lunch since you hadn't managed to pack one that morning (and darn it, you were just so busy last night!). Don't forget to grab a drink with your lunch!

With the work day through, you head home and then straight to the grocery store. "Are you a points member" they ask?... No. "It's free and it only takes a minute"... I just don't have time.

You head home, looking back on your day favorably. You ate good food, had a productive day at work, the cute barista winked at you in the morning...

It's too bad you just lost SO much money!

Ginger Chicken Dumplings

I don't think I'm alone when I say that I find something so enjoyable about bite sized foods!

Spring rolls, sliders, shrimp cocktail, caprese bites, two bite brownies, mini quiches... there's something so fun about little food (especially if you're eating all different kinds!)

Though I think my favourite bite sized thing to eat, is dumplings.

Why You Should Eat Chicken Wings On A First Date

One of the annoying things about becoming an adult is that you look back on all the advice your parents gave you (and you ignored) and realized they were 100% right.

I can't even tell you how many times over the past five-or-six years that I've had a "If I'd listened to my parents, I could have skipped all that nonsense I just put myself through" moment.

Of course, part of growing up is figuring stuff out for yourself, but I am so much more willing now to seek out my parents advice than I ever was as a teenager or university student.

There is one thing though, one piece of advice that to this day I tell my mother she is wrong about.

"Laura" she'd say to me, "when you're on a date with a man, never order anything messy. The last thing you want is for his first impression of you to be anything but ladylike."

I disagree entirely with this statement, which is why I always order the same thing on a first date:

Chicken Wings.

Keeping a Happiness Journal

In these early days of the new year, glistening with opportunity and hope, many people are still working on their resolutions.

If you're anything like me this might include something like “working on a happiness project” or “learning to appreciate the good more”. In fact, life/self-improvement is second only to fitness goals when it comes to making a new years pledge.

Frankly, with a year like 2016 behind us (oy-vey!) I think we could all use a little bit more happy in our lives. Today I’d like to share with you my favourite tool to recognizing that feeling:

A happiness journal.
