Homemade Gourmet Pizzas

I love homemade pizzas

For date night, or a fun night in with friends over a glass of wine; making homemade pizzas is a great way for everyone to enjoy themselves.

Picking your own ingredients, building something fun and different; making a personal, or a big group serving. Homemade pizza is a wonderful dinner for everyone young and old.

Recently, when preparing for my Diner en Blanc picnic, I decided that our main course would feature gourmet pizzas; pizzas that went a bit above just plain pepperoni, but were still something delicious for us to enjoy!

Whenever I make pizza at home, I always use Fleishmann's Pizza Yeast*. Following the directions on the back will lead to delicious and fresh pizza dough in 30 minutes, without a bread maker or waiting for it to rise. Sometimes if we're making deep dish, we'll substitute some flour for cornmeal for something a bit extra!

It's so easy and highly recommended!

For the event, I made four different styles of pizza! Below I'll describe what I added to each one, but here are the ingredients you'll need for all four:

  • 4 balls of pizza dough (yield from 2 Fleishmann's packages)
  • pizza sauce (I use Unico)
  • Olive oil
  • shredded mozzarella
  • buffalo mozzarella
  • goat cheese
  • prosciutto
  • fresh basil
  • cherry tomatoes, sliced in thirds
  • sweet potato, sliced thin
  • caramelized onion
  • sliced red onion
  • Sliced mushrooms
  • dried rosemary
  • balsamic vinegar
  • arugula
  • kale

Before putting your pizzas together, make your dough and separate into 4 even balls. Get two baking sheets and lightly powder with flower, or corn meal if you have any.

I also always like to have extra olive oil on hand, either to spread around the edges of the crust, or to cover the top of the pizza lightly if I'm making it "Bianco" (without pizza sauce).

Once your ingredients are ready it's time to start prepping! Set the oven to 425F to preheat and get creating!

When you're ready to bake, each pizza will take about 25 minutes to bake, just check the bottoms and edges for that nice brown colour!

Pizza Number One: Sweet Potato, Kale and Red Onion

You'll need:
  • 1 pizza dough ball
  • pizza sauce
  • shredded mozzarella (mostly on the bottom, but sprinkle some on top!)
  • sliced sweet potato
  • pieces of fresh kale
  • red onion slices
  • olive oil for the crust edges
  • salt and pepper if desired

Pizza Number Two: Goat Cheese, Prosciutto and Caramelized Onion - Bianco

You'll need:
  • 1 pizza dough ball
  • olive oil - to coat entire top of pizza
  • layer of goat cheese
  • fresh rosemary, sprinkled
  • prosciutto
  • caramelized onion
  • balsamic drizzle

Pizza Number Three: Mushroom, Prosciutto and Arugula - Bianco

You'll need:
  • 1 pizza dough ball
  • olive oil - to coat entire top of pizza
  • buffalo mozzarella - slices to roughly cover bottom
  • sliced mushrooms (Plenty! Remember they'll shrink!)
  • prosciutto
  • shredded mozzarella (sparsely along the top)
  • When pizza is almost done, put on some fresh arugula pieces in the final stages of baking!

Pizza Number Four: Classic Margherita

You'll need:

  • 1 pizza dough ball
  • pizza sauce
  • buffalo mozzarella - slices to roughly cover bottom, and shredded for top
  • cherry tomato slices
  • fresh basil
  • olive oil for crust edges
  • cracked salt and pepper if desired

Don't these look delicious! Now all you need is a bottle of wine and some friends to help you eat your way through them!

Cheers!
