To go with the punch, beer, wine, champagne and goodies, one of my cousin's favourite sayings is "I've never met a cheese I didn't like"; so cheese was on the menu in a BIG way.
The plan was to have a table laden with different cheeses, crackers, and other appetizers. My mother asked me if I could put my crafting skills to work to make signs for the different types of cheese we would have on hand.
So craft I did! If you're looking for easy to make, but still charming cheese signs (rather than just buying store bought) here's what you'll need:
- sturdy paper - I used scrap book paper in a soft pink, the themed colour for the night
- bendable craft wire
- scissors and pliers
- a hot glue gun
- a nice pen
- decorative elements - I used a roll of stickers with tiny plastic pearl detailing
Step 1 - The first thing you'll want to do is prep the "stem" or "spear" of your sign. The part that sticks into the cheese! Take your bendable craft wire and mold into shapes.
Have fun with this. I did coils around pencils, used the pliers to create zig-zags and bows, made bubble-like loops. Each cheese is different, so don't be afraid to make each sign different!
Step 2 - Sketch out the "sign" portion on your paper. Take a pencil and turn the paper over to the back side. Sketch out some simple or intricate designs, remember they need to be big enough to write the name of your cheese on.
I tried a few things, and cut each one out to decide what I liked best. In the end though I decided on a basic circle for each one. Cutting out an initial design is also helpful, because you can use it to trace all of your signs.
Cut out twice as many designs as you have signs. One will be the front and one will be the back. Make sure if you're tracing to use the back side of the paper, so any pencil marks will be hidden.
Step 3 - Time to get your glue gun! take two of your signs and one of your "spears" and get to gluing!
First, glue the top of your spear to the back side of one of your signs. Only glue about 1/3 of the way up the design, this will allow you to write on it more easily later, without having wonky writing because of the spear.
Once the glue has set, glue the two signs together. Just dot glue around the outside of your design (almost but not quite to the edge) and then press together. Make sure that the sides match up as well as they can, but you can always trim a bit as needed. Also REMEMBER, glue the back side of one to the back side of the other, no messy pencil marks this way!
Step 4 - Now you can decorate! I used the stick on pearls to add detail to the edges, but you may want to include a shiny layer by placing a larger design on the back of your sign, or drawing something intricate. It's up to you!
When you're done decorating, all there is left to do is take a nice pen and write out your cheese names!
Step 5 - Spear that cheese! And enjoy everyone saying to you "You made these?! They're fabulous!"
